It seems entirely likely that I have whooping cough. Whether I actually do or not is more or less academic at this point. I'm taking the appropriate antibiotics and am quarantined at home missing several aspects of an awesome and in one respect rather important weekend. By the time I get the test results back, the moment will have passed and I'll no longer care beyond wanting to get better.

I seem to have dreadful timing with regards to health and roller derby. I injured myself two day before intake by coming off my bike and I just don't ever do that. This time around I'm a plague vector right on testing weekend for (in my case) yellow star. I'm watching people in my intake group sitting orange star this weekend and having to beat down the jealousy with a stick. Oh well, I live in hope that a solution can be found and that I'll not have to lose another eight weeks. The tricky part with all this is that if I tested and passed this weekend and also managed the same thing for the next two testing dates, I should be bouting by November or at least be qualified to do so. This is important because I go to surgery in the first half of next year which will put me out of commission for some months. I badly BADLY want to have some decent bouting time before that. This has become really very important to me and I've been treating it as non-negotiable. I was perfectly prepared to skate myself into a shuddering pile to pass that test today but I simply can't go. The only thing stopping me from throwing all the toys out of the cot at this point is the fact that I've been told that options will be looked at. The person doing the telling is someone who Gets Things Done™. She is awesome and one of the people who've made me so welcome at NSR. So more derby love felt.

At this point I guess I settle back, drink tea with honey and try not to bring up a lung.

I hope that you feel better just as soon as humanly possible. Thank you for being one of the sensible people who stay home instead of spreading things around. The world needs a few more of those.

And I'll be crossing my fingers for you, the person who Gets Things Done™, and the possible options. I'm looking forward to hearing about your bouts.

Get well soon!
BTW, I really loved your post "The covers by which ..." and will reblog tomorrow. I mention your SL first name only, no URLs, just to be safe. I think the eloquence of what you said is too good not to share with others. Hope this is okay.
Many hugs and kisses!

I'm fine with it being reblogged although I consider it an awfully rough piece of writing. I knocked it out very quickly indeed and didn't re-read or edit at all so the flow is rubbish. Incidentally, my SL first name is now also my real first name. On the driver's license and phone bill and tax return and everything else. This is still fine.

Bugger. Adult whooping cough is definitely not fun. Apparently it's rather rampant in Melbourne the past year or so. I'm glad I had my adult booster shot before we moved down here. I'm on lurgy #4 (tonsillitis) for this winter and I reckon given how trashed my immune system appears to be, I'd be a prime candidate for whooping cough if I wasn't vaccinated.

Hope you can beat down the "but I could be doing stuff!" feeling and let yourself rest and recover. Sadly getting lurgies is often beyond our control and all we can do is rest and wait it out. Fingers crossed for a swift recovery and you'll be back on wheels in no time :)

Reminder to everyone else: if you haven't had your adult whooping cough booster shot, go get it! The one we got in our childhood wears off and aside from it being a bugger of a thing to have, it's also not good to accidentally pass it on to the more vulnerable. It's a little jab for some peace of mind.

Sucky feeling and being ill with whooping cough. I hope the weekend wasn't a complete disaster, perhaps you had good news about roller derby and/or you're feeling a little less run-down and sick?

I know this is no place for 'there is a reason why things happen' but I am wondering if that is exactly it?

She who Gets Things Done™ got things done. There will be a supplementary testing date for me and a couple of others who missed it. That was the part that was really making me miserable so I'm feeling a lot better. Also, I think the cough is receding. It's a gradual process but I'm sure it's noticably lessened from a few days ago...this round of antibiotics may just be doing the trick.

I was getting to the point of feeling awfully snowed under with things not going according to plan. This was the latest in a string of disappointments so I was having a hissy fit. Perspective is being regained :)
