This month will be one of abstinence (in some ways). I've started the detox diet and so I will have very real restrictions on what I can eat for the next three weeks. No booze, caffeine, wheat, soy or dairy. Nothing from the nightshade family which apparently includes potato, sweet potato, chilli, capsicum and eggplant. After that I'm going to try to keep my intake down and look at what exercise I might be capable of come August. The booze prohibition will lift come August but gently and with care.

I have an interview tomorrow for a permanent position doing what I'm doing now on secondment. I'm a pretty good chance to get this but I'm counting no chickens. I would like it though.

More annoyingly, I lost my purse on Saturday afternoon. The usual round of card replacement and swearing is ongoing. I discovered that it was gone just as I walked out the door on Saturday evening. It was especially annoying as I was feeling good about going out, especially after the particularly good night I had on Friday. Oh well. I'm at least feeling far more comfortable in myself and that can only be a good thing.

Sounds like an allergy exclusion diet I once went on for 8 miserable weeks. Not fun. The Solanaceae (nightshade) family also includes tomatoes, but not sweet potatoes (they're in the Convolvulaceae family). I'm guessing you're going to be living on fruit, limited veg, and rice :) I think I still have recipes from my allergy exclusion days if you get stuck for interesting things to eat. I recently discovered a very tasty sweet potato, carrot, apple, and red lentil soup. Since you're doing this voluntarily, my advice would be to stop when you start getting cranky. If you hit a point where you desperately want a cup of tea, just have a cup of tea and enjoy it. No amount of "detox" is worth feeling miserable or homicidal.

The reason I'm sticking to it is that the form of it is such that it makes it impossible for me to eat out and strips most simple starches and refined carbohydrates out of my diet. This will hopefully break some eating habits in be in place long enough for those cravings to essentially go away. I'll also get used to the idea that I don't have to be more or less sated all day - it's ok for me to be a bit peckish or even outright hungry occasionally. The same habit breaking rationale applies to caffeine and alcohol. This isn't to say that I won't have the most stonking pub meal at the end of the month but I'm hoping to be able to maintain good eating habits after that.

I have fancied doing a detox diet of some sort myself. Or just work on a series of disciplined fasts!

Sorry about the purse! I had my pocket picked in Italy--what a nightmare that was, although the number of cards was minimal since I was on vacation and didn't bring them all. We'd had such a great afternoon to have it spoiled by thieves was annoying.

Fingers crossed, prayers upward for the new position. I would think a permanent posting would benefit the psyche greatly.
