Hellooo lazyweb.

I'm trying with Linux, I really am. Do drivers for Linux actually came as a basic executable that'll stuff them into place like Win32 drivers or is the process rather more arcane? I'm hunting for a driver for an S3 chipset (I want better than 800x600 res) and I'm only finding source files with notes that talk about "building" the driver. Distro is the current version of Ubuntu.

I assume you've already tried "sudo apt-get install s3virge" , which should auto-install the drivers, and make them available to whatever Xconfig tool ubuntu uses.

You may have to edit the xconfig file by hand - it's been a long time since I had to bother with that, but I'll see if I can dig up an example.

Or 'apt-cache search s3virge' to find which package it is called if [livejournal.com profile] tyggerjai didn't already hit it on the head.

In debian, this highlights the existance of xserver-xorg-video-s3 and xserver-xorg-video-s3virge.

Install whatever apt-cache finds, and one of them will work. Having said that, I'm surprised it isn't already autodetected without you having to do a single thing.

I'd hate to suggest it to you, but you could try wading though the cesspool that is launchpad and perhaps finding some appropriate forum therein (I've never had the patience to work out how to use launchpad -- debian's tools are so much more sane) to ask a question will full contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files.

"sudo apt-get install s3virge" in konsole returned something that equated to "type the rest of the command"; a missing operand of some sort. Ultimately, it seems that the drivers are there, it's just that no matter what I do it refuses to detect the adapter properly. I've got it to display a generic 1024x768 screen, but only by telling it to use a generic monitor and graphics adaptor type. Something screwy's afoot.

Did you use quotes? Can you cut and paste the whole thing? Here's one I prepared earlier!

xserver-xorg-video-s3virge is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
dpatch
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
