Pretty pictures
Sep. 28th, 2009 02:25 amOur second full day in Napoli started with the archaeological museum. That's more or less where it ended too. We were planning to see more than one thing today but we spent as much time in there as we did in the Uffizi looking at amazing Roman stuff. I know I've said it before, but the Romans really had their shit together. I sort of knew this already but the last couple of days have really rubbed it in. I can only begin to imagine what they might have managed had they not been overrun by barbarian hordes. I'm sure that there were indications that it was time to shuffle the furniture a bit but given that we appear to have thrown a millennium down the toilet in some respects, it all seems something of a waste.
More excellent Napolese pizza today. I am minded to think in terms of balmy summer pizza evenings gathered around the pizza oven, whether it be 10B's and Splodge's oven or our own. I want to have a go at making the tomato sauce from scratch and see if we can't work out what constitutes an ideal pizza dough. Beyond that, good prosciutto, mozzarella cut into robust chunks and fresh leafy herbs ought to do the trick. A few big cold bottles of Peroni would probably compliment it all nicely.
I appear to have a beard, or at least the beginnings of one. This wasn't a conscious decision. It started with not getting it together to shave for a few days leading to me contemplating my face and deciding that hacking at it with a razor was all too scary. I'm deferring tonsorial options until I get home.
On to Rome tomorrow. This is our final stop and on the 1st of October we head home. I can't say I'll be sorry...I've had a great time and I'm still having a great time but there will be a certain restfulness in not living out of a suitcase and being in a familiar culture again.
